Hi Valerie, I was very happy to read about your experience. I have been trying to educate myself further about pros/cons of hysterectomy, and like you, find so much information about why I shouldn't have it. I am 45 yrs old, and having heavy and heavier periods now for about 3 years. I was diagnosed with a fibroid and chose to wait and see. But menopause isn't happening and symptoms are getting worse. I was anemic and now ,on 2 iron vitamins a day, that did improve. But I now have periods lasting 12-20 days, many of them heavy. I know once I have this done, I will realize just how much it has impacted my quality of life. I am scheduled for a laproscopic hysterectomy of just the uterus on Jan. 4th 2008. Although I am scared, I think it is the right decison. After reading your note, I am very encouraged that it is the right thing. Thank you for sharing......it gives me great reassurance!

I am 45 and scheduled for my procedure on June 22. I feel the same way as you and I have not even had my surgery yet. I do wonder, did you have your cervix removed as well? I am not totally sure I want it taken. I know I want my Uterus and fibroids out. The overies stay too. My thought is after all is said and done and I can be sexually active again, I hear it is not anywaher near as exciting......I am having it done laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH) procedure. My doctor supports this. Good news.Hoping you can reply back with the same positive thoughts.Thankssuea

This message is to everyone who has ever read all of the propaganda out there that says hysterectomies are horrible. I am 43, very educated, very able to research the topic and make a decision for myself. I am horrified at all of the misinformation that is out there.A hysterectomy is a WONDERFUL thing!!!! NO MORE PERIODS! Who could ask for anything more? If you are considering one, make sure you discuss all of the procedure options. The laparoscopic procedure is the best thing since sliced bread. Be sure to ask your doctor if it is an appropriate option for you. I almost had to have a laparotomy due to the size of my fibroids, but they got my uterus out using the laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH) procedure. I have had NO ADVERSE side effects and I have no regrets. 6 weeks after the procedure I was back to a normal life - but a MUCH BETTER normal life! No more period pain, no more blood stains on my clothing, no more anemia, and no more worrying. Its just the greatest thing that's ever been done to improve my health. I did keep my ovaries, and so I NOT having any of the other hormone-related side effects that some women claim to have despite the fact that they kept their ovaries. If you keep your ovaries, there are NO hormonal side effects, so don't let the propaganda scare you. There is no vaginal dryness, no night sweats, no loss of sex drive.I had a really good surgeon. He was a specialist who specializes in gynocologic oncology. I didn't have any cancer worries, but it was nice to know that my surgeon had a tremendous amount of experience with surgies to remove the uterus. So, make sure you have a really good surgeon, and be sure to ask of the LAVH procedure is right for you. If it is, then you will have no regrets.Good luck!
